Did you know that you can witness the magical spectacle of the Northern Lights not only at one of Earth’s poles but also at the equator?
To experience this phenomenon, you should head to Java Island, which is just a few hours away from Bali. From there, you’ll travel east to the Ijen volcano. Here, at an elevation of 2,000 meters above sea level, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking display of natural beauty. This includes a striking turquoise lake, vibrant yellow stones and the mesmerizing blue lights.
This place is also famous for its massive sulfur formations. During the day, workers carry enormous pieces of sulfur in their baskets. But at night the mysterious blue lights appear around the rocks. This remarkable occurrence is due to sulfur reacting with oxygen, producing a unique luminescence that becomes visible after dark.
All these elements come together to create a truly awe-inspiring landscape. Be sure to bring a camera along to capture this wonder in photographs, not just in your memory.
